Gymnocalycium ragonesei is a unique and highly sought-after cactus, often nicknamed the "Earth Cactus" due to its remarkably flat growth habit and muted, stony coloration. Native to the arid regions of Catamarca and Córdoba in Argentina, it is one of the smallest and most distinct members of the Gymnocalycium genus. 

Cultivation and Care

Because of its slow growth and small size, this cactus is a favorite for collectors who have limited space or enjoy "miniature" staging.

• Light: It prefers bright, indirect light. While it can handle some direct morning sun, harsh afternoon sun in hot climates can scorch its dark skin. A bit of shade helps maintain its deep, characteristic color.  

• Watering: Use a strict "soak and dry" method. It is highly susceptible to root rot if left in damp soil. During the winter dormancy, watering should be stopped almost entirely.  

• Soil: Requires a very gritty, fast-draining mineral mix. A blend of pumice, lava rock, and a small amount of organic potting soil works best.

• Temperature: It is relatively hardy but should be kept above 5°C to be safe. It appreciates a cool, dry winter rest to encourage blooming the following season.
