Lachenalia trichophylla is a rare and distinctive winter-growing bulb native to the Western Cape of South Africa. This species is highly valued by collectors for its unusual fine, thread-like (filiform) leaves, which give the plant a delicate, grassy appearance unlike the broad leaves seen in most Lachenalia.
Growth begins in late autumn as temperatures cool. One to two narrow leaves emerge from a small subterranean bulb, followed in winter by a short flower spike bearing small tubular to bell-shaped flowers, usually in soft greenish-white to pale yellow tones. The flowers are subtle and refined, making this species more appreciated for its botanical uniqueness than bold color.
During late spring to summer, the foliage dies back completely and the bulb enters dormancy, requiring dry conditions.
